This was a moderately funny book, but most of the humor relied on classist stereotypes that made me uncomfortable. If her plan works, she just might be able to get herself to Hollywood Hills Stunt Camp! But it’s hard to be kind when no one shows you kindness, so a few cheesy pranks may still be up her sleeve. But life as a bully is lonely, and if there’s one thing Bernice really wants (even more than becoming a Hollywood stuntwoman), it’s a true friend.Īfter her mom skedaddles and leaves her in a new town with her aunt (who is also a real live nun), Bernice decides to mend her ways and become a model citizen. When you’re a Buttman, the label “bully” comes with the territory, and Bernice lives up to her name.

It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people.Įlfrida Phipps, once of London's stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. ★★★★★ Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a thrilling story that will keep them on the edge of their seats. I haven’t read anything else by Lehane, but that is something I plan on changing. If we read the ending of the novel to mean that Teddy is, in fact, Andrew Laeddis, then the novel is no longer a mystery but a meditation on grief, and the question of whether it is possible to let go of painful memories, or to forgive oneself for wrong-doing. I’ve heard good things about the movie, but I definitely recommend reading the book first. I couldn’t wait to read each subsequent chapter and when I wasn’t reading I was trying to untangle the plot. But Lehane has managed to craft a book with one of the smartest and most exciting plots that I’ve read in a long time. I don’t want to reveal anything about the plot because the book is much better if you go into it without knowing what will happen next. When Teddy Daniels arrives on Shutter Island to investigate an escaped inmate from the maximum security prison for the mentally insane, he slowly begins to discover that there are questions that run deeper on the island than what happened to Rachael Solando. Written by a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, this is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. In retrospect, I see that the author represented him this way so that his eventual transformation would be more obvious and powerful. Quoyle is portrayed as little more than a sluggish, simple-minded animal – maybe a walrus or a manatee. That’s why I didn’t care for the first part of the book. Quoyle’s devotion to them is the first real sign there is more to Quoyle than a huge chin and a hulking body. The marriage ends catastrophically, but it produced two good things – Quoyle’s daughters, Bunny and Sunshine. Although he isn’t a very successful journalist, he does have one gift – people openly tell their stories to him because he’s a good listener.Īlso in the early part of the book, Quoyle stumbles into marriage with Petal, a lousy, no-good cheat who breaks Quoyle’s heart. While living in New York, he stumbles into an on-again-off-again newspaper job. He was brought up to think he was worthless and lived the first part of his life living up to these low expectations. The novel begins with discouraging scenes about our hero, Quoyle. I also liked the way that she went after the job she wanted on her own merits not by getting assistance from people she knows. She wasn't going to settle for anything less than what she felt she deserved. I loved the way that Gina had enough respect for herself to stand up to Jack. She knows that he's still hung up on his late wife and that's not what she wants in a marriage. Gina still feels the same attraction for him, but she's not going to marry a man she doesn't love and who certainly doesn't love her. She didn't expect Jack to come tearing after her and propose that they get married right away. While there she calmed down and decided to get her life in order and raise the baby. Finding out she was pregnant really freaked her out and she panicked, leaving him a somewhat incoherent phone message before fleeing to Switzerland. She had a really great weekend with Jack but wasn't expecting anything more. She's been pretty flighty and definitely ready for a good time. It doesn't hurt that he's hot for her too. Jack wants Gina to marry him right away for the baby's sake. She's decided on a career and feels quite capable of raising her baby on her own. Gina has decided it's time for her to grow up and face her responsibilities. At the end of that book, Gina has called on Sarah for help after finding herself pregnant with Jack's baby. We first met Gina in A Business Engagement, as Sarah's flighty younger sister. |
